Cassis, ripe black cherries, graphite, spicy wood, and a kiss of violets all emerge from the 2022 Château La Marzelle, a pure, fruit-driven, balanced 2022 that has solid mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's not the most complex Saint-Emilion out there, yet this is impeccably made and should benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar, with up to two decades of overall longevity. It might be the best vintage I've tasted from this château. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged 16 months in a mix of new barrels and amphora.

The 2022 La Marzelle has an attractive, well-defined bouquet with copious black cherry and cassis scents. It's nothing blowsy but misses a little clarity. However, a second bottle demonstrates more freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, with quite a layer of oak at the moment. There is no sign of the greenness found in one sample at primeur. It's quite spicy and hedonistic on the finish. Again, there is just a bit of bottle variation between samples here, so my score is based on the better ones.

Chalky tannins, with very clear rose petal aromatics, plenty of rich deep black fruits, finessed tannins, kick of acidity, flash of heat. No external consultant, Sebastien du Moulin technical director. Certified organic but works biodynamics. gravel, sand and clay, pretty classic Pomerol terroir in the Figeac sector. 9-30 September for harvest. Belgian owners Sioen family.

80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample. Deep crimson. Light, well-balanced, meaty nose. Extremely juicy but maybe not that complex. Nice, early-maturing drink with light inkiness on the end. (JR)
