Showing slightly faded aromas, the Figli Luigi Oddero 2019 Barolo is aging quickly, showing dried fruit, currant, pressed flower, desiccated strawberry or dried dates. There are earthy notes of compost pile or autumnal leaf. The tannins are grippy. For a wine this young, this Barolo seems older than it really is.

40% of the grapes came from Serralunga (Broglio and Baudana), 30% from Castiglione Falletto (Scarrone, Rocche Rivera) and 30% from La Morra. 25 days on the skins. Aged for 24 months in 8,000- to 9,000-litre casks of which two-thirds are French oak and one-third Austrian oak (Stockinger): ‘the idea was to maintain freshness, while the French oak makes the wine a little softer on the nose as well as on the palate.’ Lustrous and just mid ruby. A fine but subdued red-fruit nose with a suggestion of talcum powder, but still rather closed. Subdued on the palate too, but at the same time transparent and elegant with coating, finely ground tannins. Elegant, very fresh and filigreed fruit, persistent tannins. (WS)
