Score 88/100 · Drink 2027-2037, Neal Martin, Jan 2025

The 2022 Haut-Bages Monpelou presents a straightforward bouquet with black fruit, red brick and graphite aromas developing in the glass. The medium-bodied palate features quite saturated tannins. It needs a little more tension on the slightly meaty finish. That said, this Pauillac offers decent concentration with fine grip and a spicy aftertaste to savor.

Appellation signature, smoked coffee beans, espresso, slate and liquorice, vivid cassis and bilberry fruit, ripe but staying on the right side of fleshy. Clear phenolic extraction (even though they vinified here between 22C and 26C, showing again just how small the berries were in this vintage). Picking September 8 to 21.
