Score 91/100 · Drink 2026-2035, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate, Mar 2025

Slightly austere at this stage, the 2022 Couhins reveals aromas of cassis, green bell pepper, spices, licorice and pencil lead. It is medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a dense core of fruit framed by velvety, elegant tannins. Surprisingly, loamy soil notes emerge in the finish as it interacts with air, although the vineyard soil is primarily sand and gravel. Quite firm at the moment, this is a stunning effort and a wine that can be drunk anytime over the next decade. It is made with 54% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

An estate that has struggled a little to reach consistency over the past decade, but it hits its stride in 2022. Ripe black fruits, cassis and bilberry, chalky tannins, tugs through the palate, a little rustic perhaps, not as sleek as some of its appellation siblings, but has lift and charm.
