(80% of these vines were planted in 1934, according to Fred Magnien): Good dark red. Grapey dark berries, black cherry, licorice, Indian spices and violet on the nose. Then fleshy but a bit brooding--even youthfully stunted--today, with its dark fruit flavors showing good creamy depth but limited easy sweetness. There's good chalky energy here, as well as a very dark quality that reminded me a bit of Syrah. This very promising Charmes was vinified with two-thirds whole clusters, more than for the Feusselottes, and it will need a bit more patience.
