(half of this fruit came from the Côte Blonde and the other half from the Côte Brune): Brilliant purple. Suave, expansive aromas of fresh blueberry, black raspberry, incense and candied flowers. Sweet, seamless and concentrated, offering intense dark fruit preserve and cola flavors and suggestions of licorice and spicecake that build with air. In a generous, fruit-forward style, but there's very good structure here as well. Sneaky tannins frame the energetic dark fruit on the very long, juicy finish.

Showing beautifully from barrel and now from bottle, the 2013 Côte Rôtie la Mordorée comes from schist soils, was completely destemmed and spent 18 months in 25% new French oak. Its deep purple color is accompanied by classic notes of raspberries, bay leaf, olive tapenade and violets. Possessing beautiful minerality, a full, layered mid-palate and building tannin, drink this beautiful wine anytime over the coming 15 or more years.

3 ha, 100% Syrah. This is a very steep, terraced vineyard located on the border of the Côte Blonde. The soil is composed of chlorite and ferruginous mica-schists in loess depressions and earth veins. The 70-year-old vines produce tiny yields. 20 hl/ha. More bumptious and less ethereal than most Côte Rôtie. Sinewy. Somehow not quite as convincing as some other Chapoutier red rhônes from further south. Rather dry finish. Angular. (JR)
