Tasting Notes
One word: wow! What an achievement in such a warm vintage: the richness of this wine is unbelievable. Definitely a contender for wine of the vintage, Ch. Margaux offers everything you expect of the First Growth, incredible tension and density with beautiful freshness and great power. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, it is a masterpiece. The production is 30% lower this year, the lowest since 2013, with the smallest berries ever harvested at the property. Although it was a warm vintage, the wine has the pH of a cool vintage (3.6) and great freshness to balance the wine’s depth and round, velvety tannins. Inky purple-black, aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, cassis and liquorice mingle with hints of vanilla and floral perfume – with a sublime spiciness on the endless finish. The balance of this wine is incredible.

The Grand Vin 2022 Château Margaux checks in as 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc that's pulled from just 40% of the total production. It's a classic Château Margaux with its overriding sense of elegance and purity, yet it's certainly in the style of the vintage with its depth, richness, and concentration. Cassis, blueberries, acacia flowers, and spice all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a seamless, layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. The alcohol hit 14.5, and I suspect the pH is relatively high (which is common in the vintage), yet this remains pure, balanced, and is absolutely show-stopping stuff.
The bushel of red and black fruits initially get your attention before discovering all the violets, white flowers, cedar, and cigar box aromas in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is silky, sensuous, rich, and almost viscous. The fruit comes in layers, and does not stop building in intensity. The wine is poised between weight and lift, with an energetic finish delivering a powerful wall of cashmere-textured, red and black fruits that hold your focus for at least 60 seconds. This is a unique style for Chateau Margaux that is difficult to compare with previous vintages due to its levels of ABV and concentration. But I love it! The wine blends 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. All the Petit Verdot was placed into Pavillon Rouge. 14.6% ABV, is the highest ABV in the history of the estate. 3.61 pH. Yields were barely 25 hectoliters per hectare. The Grand Vin was produced using only 40% of the harvest. Picking took place September 8 - September 28, making this one of the earliest starts to a vintage in the history of the estate. Drink from 2030-2065.
Very dark purple color with a ruby edge. So much crushed blackberry and blackcurrant with violets. Exuberant. Full-bodied and very tannic with incredible muscle. This is a thought-provoking wine. The biggest Margaux I have tasted in my career. Seems a little overdone for Margaux. 92% cabernet sauvignon, 6% merlot and 2% petit verdot.
