Aged in cement vats, the Pieropan 2020 Soave Classico Calvarino is definitely heavier texturally and waxier in this hot vintage. This organic blend of 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave shows a lot of orchard fruit, with ripe apricot in center stage, and pretty details of crushed stone and yellow rose at the edges. You get more richness and density here, compared to the more vertical or lifted bouquet seen in the 2021. Production is 60,000 bottles.

Full bottle 1,342 g. 70% Garganega, 30% Trebbiano di Soave (Verdicchio) grown in a 7-ha vineyard in Soave Classico at 49–215 m on volcanic basalt. Vines are 30–60 years old with an average yield of 60 hl/ha. Fermented and aged for a year in concrete. No malo. Filtered and fined. 60,000 bottles made. Powerful floral, blossomy nose and then amazingly structured and nutty on the palate with a suggestion of salted lemons. Real grip on the finish. This youthful wine clearly has quite a future and no little complexity. (JR)

So spicy, yet also rich, the 2020 Soave Classico Calvarino impresses with an alluring mix of ground ginger, lime zest, minty-basil and wet stone. It envelopes the palate in silky textures while also bombarding it with salty mineral tones and a sour twang of green apple. While supremely elegant, the 2020 is also full of nervous energy, as it finishes long with tropical floral nuances and a bitter tug of lemon rinds. Readers can certainly enjoy the Calvarino today, yet it needs some time to come fully into focus.
