The 2021 Saint-Joseph Deschants shows pretty floral and vaguely herbal aromas set against a backdrop of ripe cherries, but it also has a slightly stinky, rotten-egg note. That should resolve with time and care in the winery—remember this was a representative tank sample, not the finished product—but it's something to watch. Medium-bodied and silky-textured, this looks like a charming wine to be consumed on the young side.

The rather simple yet elegant 2021 Saint-Joseph Deschants need time to reveal itself. Shy traces of violet emerge, complemented by discrete red fruit aromatics. Low levels of soft tannins help create a seamless mouthfeel, but the 2021 needs more substance to really shine.

The 2021 Saint Joseph Deschants is a good representation of the vintage, as it comes from both the northern and southern parts of the appellation. It's a balanced, charming Syrah offering medium-bodied aromas and flavors of red and black berries, violets, and woodsmoke. Coming from both the northern and southern regions of the appellation, it was all destemmed and brought up 70% in concrete, with the balance in demi-muids.

100% Marsanne. A portion of the wine was fermented in oak barrels, the rest in stainless-steel tanks. Tasted blind. Marzipan and honeyed notes. Good freshness on the medium-bodied palate. A little hollow on the mid palate and a clean, medium finish. (AC)
