The 2012 Château Branas Grand Poujeaux is a total charmer and will certainly scratch your itch for classic, impeccably made Bordeaux. Attractive darker fruits, lots of herbal, cedary, and subtle leather notes, medium body, soft tannins, and a plush, drinking-at-point feel all make this incredibly satisfying. It's in the middle of its drink window and should continue evolving nicely through 2027 or so, possibly a touch longer.

The 2012 Branas Grand Poujeaux has a lovely nose with brambly red fruit, briary, fern and light earthy aromas, more elegant than the 2011. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that frame the core of ginger and white pepper infused red fruit. Fine cohesion on the finish, this Moulis is à point . One of the hidden gems of this Moulis estate. Tasted at the Branas Grand Poujeaux vertical at the château.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. For some reason, the 2012 Branas Grand Poujeaux did not show well either in barrel or just after bottling, however, it has subsequently turned into a respectable Moulis. Here, it has a light tobacco-scented bouquet, dark berry fruit with light earthy tones. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin but sufficient fruit, the acidity well judged with a touch of graphite on the finish. This echoes the positive sentiments expressed by Robert Parker in his evaluation in early 2015. Tasted January 2016.
