Score 87/100 · Drink 2021-2029, William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Apr 2022

Exhibiting notions of jammy blackcurrants, blackberries and pencil shavings, the 2019 La Bridane is medium-bodied, with powdery tannins and an uncomplicated, rather ephemeral profile.

The 2019 La Bridane still feels a bit over the top on the nose, which features precocious, glossy black cherries and confit-like scents. The palate is medium-bodied, fleshy and ripe, with supple tannins and a heady, saline-tinged conclusion. I feel the alcohol blurring the finish here.

The 2019 vintage is excellent in St Julien, making the smaller names really worth seeking out. This one, owned by Bruno Saintout, is a case in point - tight structure, needs a few years to unwind, but there is an unfussy sappy quality to the tannins with sparks of oyster shell and liquorice root running through the savoury blackcurrant fruits. A fragrant tobacco leaf finish gives an extra layer of interest.
