Loïc Dugat-Py remarks that this vineyard is always the first to be picked but the last to be pressed. From vines located just outside Château de Pommard, the 2017 Pommard La Levrière Vieilles Vignes has a generous bouquet with red plum mixed with crushed strawberry, hints of kirsch and marmalade developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin that frame a sweet core of fruit, tinged with white pepper, sea salt and a hint of tangy marmalade on the dense finish.

Aromas of plums, cassis, espresso roast and grilled meats introduce the 2017 Pommard La Levrière, a medium to full-bodied, elegant and supple wine that's quite open-knit this year, with a pure core of succulent fruit and a light framing of fine, chalky tannins.

Vines 70 years old. First to be picked, 2 September. 50% new oak and about 35% stems. No need to sort because they pick out anything on the vines in August. Intense aroma that is both spicy and slightly floral with oak and fruit spice, it seems. On the palate, more savoury, grainy tannins, firm texture, robust and yet with plenty of fruit at the core. Needs time to smooth out. (JH)
