Deep, rich, smoky, and peppery, the juicy red fruits show a lot of rocks and gravel notes. Rich, sensuous, sexy and complex, the purity of the fruit, coupled with the olive notes and elegant textures really grabs you.

Opaque ruby. Pungent aromas of ripe dark berries, olive, incense and smoky minerals develop a spicy nuance as the wine opens up. Lush and deeply concentrated, displaying excellent clarity to the sappy blackberry, boysenberry and spicecake flavors. Shows unlikely finesse for its brawn and finishes extremely long, sappy and smoky; building tannins frame the densely packed dark fruit.

Hugely tannic and downright unfriendly at the moment, the 2015 Cote Rotie les Grandes Places may come around, given sufficient time. Brigitte Roch says it "needs 15-20 years," and let's hope she's right. It's concentrated and intense, with black olive and plum notes that may carry it the distance, but I have to admit I have some doubts.

Vivid purple. Powerful, mineral-tinged aromas of black and blue fruit liqueur, potpourri and olive, plus a smoky nuance that opens up in the glass. Sweet, expansive cassis, boysenberry and violet pastille flavors show impressive depth and become livelier and spicier with air. Distinctly rich and full but possesses surprising energy thanks to a spine of zesty minerality. The sappy, strikingly long finish features velvety tannins and a lingering black currant note.
