Bright purple. An explosively perfumed bouquet displays ripe, spice-tinged blackberry, cherry compote, incense and smoky bacon scents, backed by vanilla and mocha qualities. Offers palate-staining dark fruit liqueur, vanilla and candied violet flavors that are lifted and given focus by a jolt of juicy acidity. Youthfully firm tannins build steadily through a strikingly long, penetrating finish that repeats the blue fruit and floral qualities.

Inky purple/black in color, the masculine, mineral-laced 2013 Côte Rôtie les Grandes Places has the classic signature of this vineyard with its smoked dark fruits, coffee bean, and earthy aromas and flavors. Like the other Côte Rôties, it has a modern slant and is more medium to full-bodied than full-bodied, yet it has terrific purity of fruit, solid underlying structure, good mid-palate depth and a great finish. Give it a few years in the cellar and enjoy bottles over the following decade.

Cloaked in oak on the nose, and very tannic. Smoked meat and fragrant wood shavings on the palate. Formidable and massive – full of precocious appeal now, but needs years to really hit its stride. (RH)

(100% new barriques ): Dark purple. Highly aromatic bouquet of candied black and blue fruits complicated by smoky minerals, dried flowers, cinnamon and vanilla. Deep, round and expansive, offering sweet, concentrated dark berry liqueur flavors, smoky minerality and a hint of floral pastilles. This rich and powerful but surprisingly graceful wine shows a noteworthy balance of richness and vivacity.
