Tasting notes
Aromas of raspberries, warm spices, raw cocoa and a deft touch of new oak introduce the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru, a medium to full-bodied, velvety wine that's bright and penetrating. It's the usual blend of Les Pitures and Mitans, and it's the most immediate, approachable premier cru in the domaine's portfolio.

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with slightly earthy red berry fruit, white pepper and a touch of bay leaf, unfolding gently in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, firm grip, a slightly more masculine Volnay with a terse finish that should flesh out by the time it is in bottle. Give it 24 months.
One-third to one-half Pitures next to Clos des Ducs, with similar soil but more east facing, and Mitans, with browner, more iron-rich soil (L’Ormeau is now called Les Mitans). Sometimes young-vine fruit is included but not in this cuvée. Cask sample. Bitter-cherry sensation and then lots of broad fruit. (JR)
