The 2004 Fidenzio has the elements of a great wine in the making because the fruit, aromatics and structural components are all aging at a similar pace. Still a few years from its early peak, the 2004 offers up a compelling array of grilled herbs, pipe tobacco, dark fruit and graphite in a full-bodied, sumptuous style. At present the 2004 is a bit closed in on itself, but from time to time it shows glimpses of what is in store for the future.

Fidenzio, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot blend from the Tuscan coast, is one of Italy’s most elusive wines. Production is small and distribution is inconsistent, which is why I nearly always have to wait for bottles to appear on retail shelves before I can review the wines. No known US importer.

This is a solid Bordeaux blend, with lots of currant, blackberry and raspberry character, yet it's also subtle and racy. Full-bodied, with a solid core of chewy tannins and a long finish. Very structured. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. A new winery to watch. Best after 2009. 450 cases made, 60 cases imported.
