Saturated ruby. Expressive blackberry and cherry compote scents are complemented by hints of exotic spices, smoked meat and olive. Round and fleshy but energetic as well, offering intense black and blue fruit and spicecake flavors that are underscored by a core of juicy acidity. A smoky bacon note lingers on the youthfully tannic finish, which shows strong, spice- and mineral-driven persistence.

Black pepper, charred beef, a touch of mint, lots of mushroom and something quite gamey, like pâté. Surprisingly open already, with very polite tannins that do their best to go unnoticed. An understated Hermitage? Yet the quality of flavours is magnificent. (RH)

Sorrel's 2018 Hermitage is floral and red fruited, with delicate tea-like nuances entwined with violets, raspberries and cherries. It's full-bodied but not overly weighty or rich, showcasing the rarely seen elegant side to this appellation.

100% Syrah. Cask sample. Strong leathery note with a medicinal overtone that has some acetic influence to it. Superbly ripe fruit, and excellent savoury persistence. There's definitely an animal character here, very possibly brett-related, but it only adds to the complexity of the palate. Remarkably suave tannic feel. Seems drinkable early. (RH)
