The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru is showing a little Brettanomyces on the nose that detracts from the delineation. Yet, there is some nice brambly red fruit trying to get out. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, nicely proportioned with a surprising keen thread of acidity. Structured, nice grip with decent persistence, this has potential. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru was very closed on the nose despite encouragement, only reluctantly revealing dense black fruit, briar and melted tar aromas, plus a touch of tobacco right at the end. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh and saline, and that marine influence carries through to the structured, slightly gritty finish. Rough around the edges at the moment; give this 4–5 years before broaching.

The natural refinement of Les Cailles is very much on display with its cool, pure and airy aromas of red and dark pinot fruit along with a lovely range of spice, tea and discreet earth nuances. As is usually the case, this is notably more refinement to the strikingly well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess an almost pungent minerality though the finish, while impressively long, is a bit grippy and a touch warm as well. This is still quite good but I fear the hail damage will prevent this from achieving its usual level.
