Tasting notes
The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets will need some time, but it's promising, opening with notes of berries, plums and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, layered and structured, it's chalky and reserved today, but it should blossom with bottle age.

The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a gorgeous fragrant floral bouquet with bunches of roses complementing the vibrant red fruit. Wonderful intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins, quite spicy towards the finish with a slightly confit towards the end. This is destined to age very well. Superb.
The 2018 Volnay Les Caillerets 1er Cru comes from a tiny 0.13-hectare plot that was replanted in the 1980s. Its an expressive bouquet shows a little more charm and precision than the Les Champans, partly thanks to the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannin, gentle grip, a smooth texture and quite lush red berry fruit on the finish. While not the most complex Les Caillerets I have tasted from the domaine, this has a certain swagger that is appealing. Just three barrels produced.
