50% whole bunch, 30% new oak. Cask sample. Heavy, tub-thumping style, celebrating all the volume of Gevrey. Retains savoury charm, and there is a touch of milk chocolate for complexity on the finish. Lengthy and full of promise. (RH)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru matures in 30% new oak and with 50% whole bunches (the domaine feels that more than this percentage is excessive.) The bouquet is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, plenty of red berry fruit mixed with hints of pain d’épices and touches of cassis. This is quite open on the finish but one feels it deserves two or three years before reaching for the corkscrew. Fine.
