Darkly alluring, almost smokey in nature, the 2019 Rosso Granomelo tempts the senses with a complex blend of black currants, exotic spice, air-dried meats and crushed rocks. This seems to hover across the palate, lifted and finessed, with rose-tinged red berries that slowly take on a more savory profile as saline-mineral tones form toward the close. The 2019 lingers with impressive length and is potent, blending wild herbs with black fruits and blood orange hints that slowly fade to leave behind a fine web of tannin. Entirely unique, this is easily one of the most interesting Sangiovese-based reds that I’ve tasted outside of the more important appellations of Tuscany.

Full bottle 1,254 g. 100% Sangiovese, farmed organically and biodynamically. 21-year-old vines from the Melogranino vineyard on sand, silt and clay. Spontaneous fermentation, skin maceration in cement for 2 days, soft pressing. 24 months in cement. Total added sulphites 40 mg/l. Unfiltered, unfined. 2,500 bottles. On day one, closed and smelling, a little, of chocolate and burnt malt. Day two, red forest fruit on the nose, gritty and gravelly on the palate. The fruit shining quietly, pure and ruby, through a lattice lace of very dry stemmy tannins, wild herbs and spice. Superb with rare roast lamb. Decant, even a day before, and serve with unshowy food.
