The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru far surpassed my and indeed every attendee's expectations. Admittedly, there is some reduction on the nose, but here it is no problem, as one can easily discern the tightly packed ripe red berry fruit that will burst forth in the future. The palate is beautifully balanced with svelte tannins, lovely poise and tangible energy. Bright red berry fruit, white pepper and Szechuan peppers leave the tongue tingling. It retains impressive freshness and delineation all the way through to the bravura finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Vines planted in 1934. Lots of punchdowns (seven) for a 2021; 30% whole bunch. Cask sample. Clear, bright mid-pale ruby. Floral raspberry, succulent but lifted. Extremely silky, with a beautiful, rich texture. Very fine tannins, so exquisitely neatly woven. Lovely, top-dog wine. (MH)

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru was blended with 25% whole clusters, and this is the first year when Liger-Belair stopped ploughing the vines. It has a beautifully composed bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit. A touch of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly austere tannins, finely balanced, a lot of backbone here, with a note of tobacco and allspice on the finish. Moderate length for a Richebourg that will gain more depth through the second winter in barrel.
