Tasting notes
The Zýmè 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico AM offers intensity and depth with lifted aromas of dried apple skin, apricot, honey and black fruit. There is also generous clove and toasted nutmeg. That hint of volatility serves to give extra push and verticality to this full-bodied blend of traditional grapes Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Oseleta, Croatina and Molinara. The 2018 vintage offers pretty freshness and sweet fruit to close. I like the punchy, traditional style of this wine, although it might not be for everyone. This is an 11,000-bottle release.

The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is understated, with a smoldering mix of dried black cherries and steeped plums complicated by shavings of dark chocolate and hints of clove. This is seductively round and soothing, with velvety textures and masses of mineral-tinged red and blue fruits, all guided by vibrant acidity. The 2018 tapers off long and nearly salty, with gently grippy tannins and a bitter twang of exotic spice. Through it all, freshness is expertly maintained.
