Sweet Apot Outstanding. An airy and markedly floral nose grudgingly reveals spicy notes of both red and dark currant, spice and plenty of earth character. There is good richness to the vibrant and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that retain fine delineation on the elegant, dusty and well-balanced if very tightly wound finish. This excellent broad-shouldered effort is going to require extended cellaring and particularly so in large format.

The 2018 Volnay Les Pitures 1er Cru, which is only bottled in magnums, has wonderful detail and precision on a nose of black cherries and hints of cassis mixed with incense and iris petals. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins. Fleshy and generous, with a gentle grip on the linear and slightly meaty finish. Superb.

Mingling aromas of sweet red berries and plums with notions of candied peel, raw cocoa and loamy soil, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures is medium to full-bodied, powdery and refined, with good depth at the core and a long, mineral finish. This is an ethereal, elegant Pitures that will be strikingly transparent at maturity.

Above Frémiets, close to Pommard. White, calcareous soils. Started bottling it separately in 2015; before that it was an ingredient in Volnay premier cru. Always in magnum because it ages so well. Barrel sample. Back to a fragrance of sweet Volnay fruit. Pretty but also with a stony mineral layer. Deep, mineral/chalky tannins. Delicately built but still firmly structured. The fruit is hiding in the core for now. The tannins marked by the limestone in their firm minerally finesse. (JH)
