The garnet red 2019 Impronte was initially a bit more reserved compared to the 2017 and 2018, but as it opened in the glass, it became the most distinctive. It’s woven together very nicely, with notes of redcurrants, blood orange, Mediterranean herbs, and rosemary offering fresh lift. More similar to the 2018 than the 2017, it’s full-bodied, with refined tannins and savory notes of espresso and Amaro herbs on the finish. As it opens, it starts to show its energy and salty nature. Drink 2025-2045. Giorgio Meletti Cavallari founded his eponymous Bolgheri estate in 2002. As the son of Piermario Meletti Cavallari, Giorgio grew up around the wines of his father at Grattamacco. With the sale of Grattamacco in 2002, Giorgio set out on his own to create a winery with his own stamp on it, an idea realized visually with his thumbprint embossed on the labels and in his top bottling of Impronte. The cellar operating now is three years old and features concrete tanks for some fermentations. Giorgio is currently farming the highest-elevation vineyard site in the region at 350 meters above sea level, which is higher than the long-time highest elevations vineyards of Tenuta San Guido. These are certainly wines to have on your radar if they aren’t already, as I imagine Cavallari’s star will continue to rise.

Made with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Cabernet Franc, the Giorgio Meletti Cavallari 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Impronte gets its fruit from a steep and inaccessible vineyard parcel (measuring 1.5 hectares) at a breezy 350 meters in elevation with black schistous soils. I've been there and can assure you: It is out of this world. Thick forests stand at the rear and open views onto the glimmering Tyrrhenian Sea open to the front. This is indeed a very special wine with etched black fruit, pencil shaving and crusted stone. The tannins are dusty and dry. With only 5,000 bottles made, Impronte is fermented in cement vats, and the wine is later racked over to barrique for 18 months.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc. Ageing: 18 months in barriques. Transparent ruby – already looks evolved. Distinctive and lively – there is real life here. I wonder whether it’s organic? Nice savoury, saline touch at the end. Real beginning, middle and end to this wine. (JR)
