The 2020 Côte Rôtie Loss showed nicely, with a rich, medium-bodied, structured style that needs some bottle age. Black fruits, smoked herbs, earth, and graphite all define the nose, and it has building tannins, good mid-palate depth, and outstanding length. There's a firm edge to these tannins that gives me a touch of pause, but I think this will come together nicely with 3-4 years of bottle age.

Despite being aged in second and third use barrels, Pichat's 2020 Cote Rotie Loss (from loess soils) is more noticeably toasty and cedary than his other bottlings. A blend of 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier, it does back the wood notes with lovely shades of raspberries and cherries. It's full-bodied, creamy textured and an overall joy to taste, the fruit flavors flowing easily over the palate into a long, silky finish.
