The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is another that sports reduction, but here it seems more fixed and difficult to dislodge. It completely obscures the terroir expression. The palate is again very reductive and smothers the fruit, though the honeyed texture is quite alluring. However, it does miss some delineation and mineralité on the finish, rendering it rather generic compared to the best wines in this flight. Some oxidation in the glass, albeit not as severe as others. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru comes from three plots. It takes time to unfurl on the nose, eventually offering citrus fruit, popcorn and hints of Mirabelle. The palate is balanced with an attractive, slightly waxy texture. It shows fine depth with the mineralité eventually surfacing with aeration. Afford this three or four years in bottle.

This lovely wine boasts aromas of ripe apricot and quince fruit with a suggestion of honeycomb and hay. The palate demonstrates power and depth of flavour, and the wine continues to impress with abundant extract, balanced acidity, and a wonderfully balanced finish. The grapes come from three plots that total 0.38 hectares; they are slowly pressed as whole clusters, settled overnight, fermented in cask (one-third new), and aged over two winters.
