The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a delectable bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, crushed rose petals, cold stone and light seaweed scents. Really complex and quite compelling. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. This is well balanced with satisfying substance. Maybe it does not quite have the mineralité and complexity of Mortet's Lavaux on the finish, yet I feel it will evolve in the bottle. Give it three or four years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru suffered from both frost and degenerate de vines. There are just four barrels this year. It has a heavily scented potpourri and thyme scented nose that just obscures the terroir expression a little. The palate is medium-bodied with surprisingly juicy tannins and candied orange peel infusing the red fruit, maybe just missing a little depth and grip towards the finish. Seductive, but I suspect some of Magnien's other cuvées will have more staying power.

33 ares (0.82 acre), 2% Chardonnay plants co-planted and into the blend. Mid ruby. Sweet, refined fruit – cherries, strawberries. Wild strawberries add touch of savoury fruit. Balanced by a firm structure giving this depth, with good grip on the palate. Nevertheless, retains grace and balance without noisy volume. (MH)
