The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a potent eucalyptus scent on the nose that feels incongruous and yanks the aromatics away from where this wine was born. It actually intensifies with aeration. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, plush with exotic red fruit. It feels somehow unnatural when compared to its peers. I would like to re-taste this and see whether that eucalyptus note is as prominent or whether it is just an errant bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from two 0.08-hectares parcels at the bottom and top of the climat (Magnien the only one with two plots). I find the nose a little reduced at the time of my visit, though there is clearly plenty of fruit coiled up, black rather than red. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and a keen thread of acidity. It's very well structured and endowed with veins of blueberry fruit and cassis towards the persistent finish that feels quite chalky. Afford this fine Ruchottes five or six years in bottle.

Dark-mid ruby. Dense, smoky red berries, with lots of savoury, woodsy complexity and interest. This has the evident extra weight and dimension of a grand cru, with great drive and persistence on the long finish. Very fine. (MH)
