These "Vieilles Vignes", from two plots in the north of the village, are over 100 years old – giving the wine particular intensity. Made with 60% whole-bunch, the 2021 rendition offers a sweet, pure strawberry fruit balanced by savoury tones. Fresh and saline, there’s a line of minerality chalky grip to the structure that offsets the core of fruit. This needs time to unwind and reveal its potential.

Around 50% whole bunches for this vintage. Cask sample, to be bottled in February. Mid to light crimson. Smells quite different from the Clos Village. The stemmy character of whole-bunch fermentation showing a little more? Soft, approachable, but with the tannins to keep it in shape for the medium term. Savoury, smooth, long finish. (JH)
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes Vieilles Vignes comes from the north of the village. I feel that the whole bunches (60%) comes across a little too strong on the nose, consequently it masks some of the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, quite fresh and saline, a healthy dash of white pepper towards the understated finish. Fine, but I might have dialled down the whole bunches here.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini was established in 2012 when Florence Heresztyn took over her family domaine in Gevrey-Chambertin with her husband Simon Mazzini (who originally comes from Champagne).
