Drink 2024-2034, FINE+RARE, Oct 2022

Errázuriz’s Las Pizarras Chardonnay comes from the slate soils of coastal, cool-climate Aconcagua in Chile. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak, this is Errázuriz’s top Chardonnay bottling. The wine has perfect poise, capturing amazing freshness while remaining fantastically juicy on the palate. The wine has classic oatmeal, hazelnut and nougat aromas, along with iced citrus fruit. The acidity is mouth-watering but is beautifully integrated with a creamy texture bringing depth and finesse. Sappy salinity gives the wine an impressively long finish.

The 2020 Chardonnay Las Pizarras from Aconcagua Costa is austere on the nose, with floral notes, apple and herbs, along with hints of pennyroyal and anise. The palate is enveloping and lifted by high, precise acidity.

The 2020 Las Pizarras Chardonnay comes from a challenging warm and dry year, and they sorted and selected the grapes looking for as much freshness as possible, they started harvesting early and kept the alcohol to 12.5%, but it has a slightly higher pH at 3.22. 2019 was nearly as warm as 2017 and the driest in the last 50 years, but they had a little higher yields and the wine was not as concentrated. The brutal selection (they only produced 4,900 bottles, whereas there were 8,900 from 2021...) paid off, paired with the more careful management of the irrigation to make the vines suffer less, so the wine comes through as harmonious and fresh; it's only in the comparison with a cooler year when it suffers. It's tasty and spicy, elegant and balanced, with purity and the minerality that is the flagship from this wine. It was bottled in April 2021.

The 2020 Chardonnay Las Pizarras from Aconcagua Costa, was fermented and aged for 13 months in 400-liter French barrels, 30% of them new. Yellow in color, with a delicate nose of mild hazelnut, apple, linden blossom, honey, acacia, hints of herbs and a whiff of mint. In the mouth, the vibrant acidity sets the tone, accompanied by a chalky, saline feel that injects energy and tension before the long, bold finish.
