Tasting notes
FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

Duroché has 1.2 hectares of this cool, higher-altitude Premier Cru, with vines planted between 1923 and 1981. In 2021, it’s a particularly pretty, pure and elegant wine. The nose offers floral pot-pourri, but with succulent red-berry fruit behind. The palate has gorgeous energy, tight yet fresh and pure. There’s a pleasing sucrosity that rounds out the texture, with a mineral and crunchy redcurrant bite to the finish. There’s 15% whole-bunch and no new oak, creating a crunchy and pure expression of the site.

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru offers high-toned, quite bold dark plummy fruit, but there is a lot of volatile acidity to contend with. The palate is sweet on the entry with saturated tannins, but there is almost a total absence of terroir expression, finesse or tension. This is not a correct bottle so I won't score this. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Some structure and concentration but still some seductive fruit, as in the village wine. Very perfumed with good balance. Even if youthful tannins are in evidence, there is plenty of fruit to counterbalance them. (JR)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru was completely de-stemmed this year. It has a very understated bouquet that takes time to gradually unfurl, revealing pretty strawberry fruit, wet limestone and rose petal scents. The palate is smooth on the entry with lithe tannins, well balanced, not complex but reassuringly persistent on the finish. This will doubtlessly be drinking after just a couple of years in bottle.
