The 2021 Falanghina Via del Campo is understated in the glass, whispering with florals, crushed pear, wet stone and white smoke. It’s round and textural, with ripe orchard fruits and saline mineral tones that add a more tactile feel toward the close. This finishes with medium length, lemon rind bitterness and hints of green apple.

Luigi Moio takes the Falanghina grape to soaring new heights. The Quintodecimo 2021 Irpinia Falanghina Via del Campo is the result of 20 years of research and experimentation, I am told. Professor Moio's dream of a vintage that balances both alcohol and acidity was realized in 2021. With fruit from a site located from 300 to 440 meters in elevation on calcareous clay soils, this wine offers fresh and exotic tones of tropical fruit, kiwi and green papaya. However, there is a unique textural richness to the wine (care is taken during decantation with methods inspired by Chardonnay in Burgundy) that feels glossy and silky but never too waxy or heavy.
