The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a more concentrated nose compared to its peers, just a little reduction but plenty of black cherry and raspberry fruit packed behind it. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, saline in the mouth with an insistent grip towards the finish. There is a pleasant marine influence that surfaces with time. Overall, this has promise. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

Cask sample. Deep cherry red. Subtle and dark-fruited on the nose. Dry and firm on the palate, much less open than some in this vintage but all in balance with the dry and fine tannins and the freshness entwined with the lurking fruit. Chewy chalky finish, the fruit not quite as rich as the Perrières but longer and fresher. Worth the extra. (JH)
