The full-bodied 2018 Cote Rotie Lieu-Dit Montmain is a powerful, broad-shouldered example of the appellation, marked by dark fruit notes and masses of ripe tannins. Plum and chocolate notes are balanced by black olives and hints of roasted beef and rich, velvety tannins on the long finish. This has come together nicely since last tasted from barrel.

Bright purple. Lively blackberry, cherry liqueur and floral scents are lifted by building spice and mineral flourishes. Sweet, seamless focused on the palate, with a smoky mineral quality sharpening primary black/blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. The juicy, sharply delineated finish features subtle tannins, vibrant mineral cut and shows strong persistence. There's a much more civilized mien to this wine than its wild and crazy 2017 sibling. (no stems and 15% new oak)

From the more northern part of the appellation, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Lieu-Dit Montmain is a ripe, fleshy, undeniably sexy Côte Rôtie that's loaded with sweet blue and black fruits, spice box, flowery incense, and fruitcake-like aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, sweet tannins, and an expansive, opulent texture, it's going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet cruise in cool cellars for 10-15 years. This tiny Northern Rhône estate continues to produce a colossal lineup of wines. While they pull from top estate terroirs around Hermitage and the Northern Rhône, they also have a large négoçiant line that’s loaded with values.

Cask sample. Tasted blind. Oxidised fruit. Simple, overripe palate, which lacks precision and depth for its quality level. (RH)
