The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru comes from the southern flank of the vineyard and comprises just two barrels this vintage. It includes a little whole bunch, around 10%. When I tasted this from barrel, it had a reticent nose, quite distant and not as immediate or as seductive as Duroché’s other 2018s. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, pliant tannins matched with well-judged acidity. It develops a pleasant rondeur toward the finish, almost as if compensating for the aromatics. A multifaceted wine that becomes more and more floral with aeration. Mercurial and endlessly fascinating.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux unfurls in the glass with fragrant aromas of red cherries, orange rind and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and supple, with succulent acids and good length on the finish. From a parcel planted in 1986, Duroché always produces an unusually elegant rendition of this often muscular premier cru.

Tank sample but about to be bottled. Deep cherry red. Pretty, darkly floral nose, dark-red fruit and a hint of peony. Mineral too, subtle, paper-fine texture, lovely freshness and that scentedness to the juicy finish, escaping the tannins. Delicious. (JH)
