Tasting notes
The 2019 Carignano del Sulcis Rocca Rubia is dark and brooding, with a core of crushed plums and wild blueberries lifted by a whiff of mentholated herbs. It’s silky, smooth and dense, with brisk acidity to balance. A polished wave of ripe red and black fruits leaves a coating of gentle tannins in their wake. The 2019 finishes with admirable length and concentration. A citrus tinge adds a lively flourish through the close. This beautifully tailored Carignano del Sulcis will pay dividends in the cellar.

Full bottle 1,327 g. 100% Carignan. An intensely sweet strawberryness on the nose – not quite jam, not quite cooked, but not fresh either. Throat-warming alcohol, and despite a strong, dark, thick woody frame, the wine is overflowing with strawberries and molten milk chocolate. Warm cumin and nutmeg spice, and then, at the end, something minty bright and fresh. Much less rough and tough in tannins and less rustic than I was expecting for a Sardinian Carignan. As comfortable as a deep, worn armchair. (TC)
