Dark violet. Powerful blackberry, cherry compote and violet scents are complemented by suggestions of candied licorice, vanilla and smoky minerals. Densely packed and focused on the palate, offering intense bitter cherry, dark berry, fruitcake and allspice flavors that are firmed by an undercurrent of juicy acidity. Slowly building tannins frame the finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity and resonating florality.

The 2017 Moulin-à-Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin is showing well, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, forest floor, candied peel, espresso roast and a spicy framing of new wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, succulent acids and ripe, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, oak-inflected finish. While this is currently quite marked by its élevage, it promises to become nicely integrated with time.
Very fine and refined with a very delicate mouthfeel and structure this year. Subtle berries and wet earth with some mushrooms. Bark, too. Medium body. Fresh finish. A wine thatâs all in delicacy. Drink now.
