Tasting notes
The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a youthful medium scarlet color and takes an earthier and spicier profile, with aromas of polished leather, quinine, peppercorn, baked cherry, and cedar. Full-bodied, with good freshness, it offers a polished feel in its velvety rich tannins, mineral undercurrents, and mouthwatering finish. It’s a robust style, but it keeps things well-managed and long on the palate. Drink 2025-2045. Brancaia is home to three estates for their wine label, two in the communes of Radda and Castellina in Chianti, and the third in Maremma. Bruno and Brigitte Widmer purchased the first parcels in Castellina in 1981 and expanded to Radda in 1989. Across the range, they are producing high-quality wines with a polished style and notable age-ability.

Here is another impressive organic wine from the talented winemaking team at Brancaia and owner Barbara Widmer. The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is enriched and fleshed out with dark cherry, spice, clove and grilled herb. This vintage is a real pleasure to drink straight out of the gate. Some 9,000 bottles were produced.
The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a racy, heady wine. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, menthol, orange peel, cinnamon and sweet oak lend an air of exoticism throughout. The Gran Selezione is a bit riper and more flamboyant than the Riserva, but I don't find it more complex.
The entry-level Brancaia 2020 Chianti Classico (100% organic Sangiovese with 40,000 bottles released) is teeming with energy and life thanks to bright cherry, cassis and floral aromas. The wine feels clean and polished on the palate, with mid-weight intensity and balanced freshness.
