The 2018 Pommard Epenots 1er Cru has a convincing bouquet with intense red and black fruit, sous-bois , rooibos, and blood orange scents. The oak here is neatly integrated at first and yet after 10 minutes there is a charred wood/torrefactory character (think of South African biltong - but do you want that in your Pommard?) The palate is medium-bodied with quite a harsh oakiness on the entry that seems to come out of the blue after the aromatics. Balanced, yet at the moment this seems determined to say more about the cooper than the terroir. Odd showing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.
