Score 88/100 · Drink 2023-2037, Neal Martin, Jan 2022

The 2017 Volnay Clos des Angles 1er Cru has a pastille-like bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberry and cranberry, showing a little more intensity than Bitouzet-Prieur's Les Pitures; however, I find the oak obfuscates the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins and quite candied in style, revealing blood orange and an almost cereal-like tincture toward the finish. The winemaking regimen comes across strongly at the moment. Closure is Diam 5. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

One of the successes of the range is the 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles, a lovely wine that bursts with notes of cherries, raspberries, woodsmoke and rose hips. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with a succulent core of fruit, ripe and powdery tannins and good persistence on the finish.
