Mid-to-deep, developed ruby with bright, orange rim. Stupendous, complex, deep, balsamic nose with all the elements clearly defined: eucalyptus, dark tobacco leaf, black pepper, prune and damson, liquorice root – it goes on and on. Fantastic, elegant palate with coating fine tannins sticking like clay to the palate. Lively, succulent acidity. It is ageing in a glorious way. (WS)

Here is one of the most celebrated Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines produced in Italy. The 2009 Alghero Marchese di Villamarina is a full throttle red with wild myrtle, Mediterranean shrub, bramble and balsam herb. Although 2009 is recorded as a hot vintage, this wine feels like it comes from a cooler vintage instead. It is initially closed in terms of its aromatic offering and its mouthfeel is both focused and fresh. These qualities bode well for the future evolution of Villamarina.
