Simple, red-fruited nose. Plenty of substance on the palate with superfine tannins and dark fruit. Layered and ageworthy, still giving a great deal of pleasure. (RH)

The 2016 Santenay Clos de Malte Rouge (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing well from bottle, bursting with aromas of ripe cherries, berries, raw cocoa and cinnamon, framed by a subtle touch of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and vibrant, with a lavishly textural attack, tangy acids and fine-grained but abundant structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will merit a bit of patience but is a fine value proposition in 2016.
The nose here is floral and pretty with blue fruit and hints of strawberries. Medium-bodied, firm and tannic with linear acidity that gives the wine drive and substance. Try after 2021.
Cask sample. Lightish crimson. Scented and sweet-fruited on the nose, so inviting. Much drier on the palate, almost chalky, but not drying. Firmer and darker on the palate. Persistent and just a little tongue-tied. (JH)

Louis Jadot is arguably the most consistent négociant house in Burgundy. It has managed to straddle both the entry-level and fine wine market, while retaining respect in both.
