The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto Il Poggio has finally started to budge a little. A powerful, imposing wine, the 2016 is going to need at least a few years more to soften. Beams of tannin and bright acids frame a potent, virile Chianti Classico built for the cellar. Leather, tobacco, incense and dried herbs linger on the potent, deeply resonant finish. The 2016 is an especially dark, almost somber Il Poggio.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna il Poggio is a potent, virile wine that demands patience. It is also the kind of Chianti Classico that won't truly be expressive until the tannins have softened and the aromatics become more open. That is not likely to happen until at least age ten or more. To be sure, the 2016 is not especially forthcoming or charming today.

Sweet berries with sliced cherries and mushrooms. Pungent flowers and fresh mushrooms, too. Full-bodied with layers of round, succulent tannins that are enveloped in ripe fruit. It’s rich and lively at the finish. A rather plush and exciting Monsanto. Really excellent now, but even better in 2024.

Barberino Tavernelle. 95% Sangiovese, 3% Colorino, 2% Canaiolo. Temperature-controlled vinification in stainless-steel conical vats with rack and return (délestage) and pumping-over for 20–22 days. Blackish ruby. Classic Sangiovese nose with extra depth plus drive. Fragrant yet deep-rooted. Really edgy acidity. Very fine wine by any measure with pace and nuance. (JR)
