Score 91-93/100 · Drink 2022-2037, Neal Martin, Jan 2019

The 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru is matured with 70% whole bunches, not that you can tell, in just 11.11 percent new oak (one quarter-size barrel new plus two used pièces , if you’re doing the math!) It has quite an intense bouquet, a combination of red and black fruit mixed with oyster shell and hints of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, smooth texture and good balance, displaying an almost pastille-like purity and a sweet, maraschino-tinged finish. Excellent and maybe earlier-drinking than the Clos de Vougeot.

Vinified with 70% whole cluster, the 2017 Echézeaux Grand Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of peony, baking chocolate, roses and sweet berry fruit. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and satiny, with an expansive attack, a generous and open-knit core of fleshy fruit and a sneakily persistent finish.
