Pure perfection in a glass and a match of the other-worldly 2001, the 2016 Clos Des Truffiers comes from some of the oldest Syrah vines in the Languedoc and spent 30 months in new French oak barrels. Deep purple, with incredible and singular notes of blackcurrants, cured meats, black olives, graphite, and spice, this magical wine hits the palate with a full-bodied, massive mouthfeel that, like all truly great wines, stays light and weightless, with remarkable purity, finesse and elegance. It leads with its fruit today yet has ample underlying tannins, a great mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. It will be approachable with just 4-5 years of bottle age and cruise for two decades. Hats off to winemaker Claude Gros and the Rosset family for another incredible wine!

Bottled in January, the 2016 Coteaux du Languedoc looks even better than it did as a barrel sample. It's a huge, full-bodied, rich wine of absolutely mammoth proportions, yet it remains fresh and vibrant. Grace notes of vanilla and chocolate accent concentrated blueberries and blackberries on the creamy-textured palate and linger through the long, supple finish. It should be released in July 2019.

Still lots of oak here. Not nearly ready. Sweet, dark ripe fruit laced with almond essence and cherry liqueur and coconut. Throat-warming heat, a touch of cardamom. deep-pile velvet. And then a line of black-olive-tapenade bitterness. Massively impressive but you'd struggle to get through more than a small glass. (TC)
