The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne opens with a stunning display of floral-laced black cherry, becoming dark and deeper in the glass, as notes of brown spice, balsamics, leather and air-dried meats develop. On the palate, cool-toned textures race like liquid silk, ushing in fleshy red fruits, zesty minerals and spice, all framed by balanced acids and fine tannin. The finish goes on and on, being both structured and fresh, as I can feel its young tannin pulling at the senses while allowing notes of black cherry, spice and sweet floral tones to linger on. It’s a dramatic, dark beauty of a wine that will only get better with time.

Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Somewhat closed on the nose, but with a hint of gingerbread. Open-knit fruit that is easy and quite ripe, verging on overripe. Bags of coating tannins add contrast. (WS)
This is a special selezione expression. The Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne starts off a bit closed and shy, however it soon gains speed thanks to the intensity of its berry fruit, spice and camphor ash aromas. This wine is built to withstand longer cellar aging. It is firmly compact and tight at its core, recalling a Brunello from a cooler vintage. However, much of that 2015 sunshine and dark fruit exuberance comes through nonetheless. Fruit comes from a 10-hectare site with a large component of clay in the soils. Only 6,600 bottles were made, and the wine was released in January 2020.
Sliced, ripe strawberries with cherries and licorice and lavender on the nose. Full body. Dense and tight with ripe and polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows power and density. Drink after 2021.
