Tasting notes
Pepe Raventós’s Mas del Serral comes exclusively from an historic 1.92-hectare plot of 80-year-old Xarello vines, grown on limestone-rich soils. The wine is only made in top vintages and less than 900 bottles are produced. The wine is terroir-driven, with earthy mineral notes dominating both the nose and palate. The wine has lovely, toasted hazelnuts, sea spray, iodine and savoury autolytic aromas. There is a fantastic attack on the palate with bright acidity, sherbet, fresh pear and citrus fruit notes mingling with almond nuttiness and mouth-watering saline minerality. The bready autolytic notes come through on the finish. At 10 years of age there is still so much energy to the wine; it will be fascinating to see this develop further in bottle.

I loved the complexity and nuance of the 2010 Mas del Serral that I tasted next to the 2011 and 2012. This had the advantage of time and developed great aromatic, spicy notes of curry and an herbal touch of celery, deep flavors with pungent notes that last for a very long time and a creamy texture from the abundant small bubbles. It has a nice compromise between youth and development and power and elegance. It's tasty, finishing with an almost salty twist, and with time in the glass, it developed a peaty and smoky nose that made me think of some Islay malt whisky. 2,047 bottles and 494 magnums produced. All bottles carry the disgorgement date, but this wine always spends a minimum of 100 months in bottle. The bottle I tasted was disgorged in April 2022, so with a longer time sur lie.
“Very delicate sweet red cherry, light notes of ripe apricot, creamy brioche notes with a vanilla and ginger glaze, chamomile, white tea, and toasted red peppercorn. All aromatic aspects are very fresh, as if from fruits picked the same morning when the bottle was opened. Plenty of textured, savory mousse and a palate of yellow fruits, complex spice notes carry on to the palate showing a finely honed backbone to the wine, threaded with excellent acidity. Wonderfully framed sparkling showing what Iberian climes are capable of.”
