FINE+RARE, Apr 2022

Always a consistent performer in recent years, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of the highlights of Pauillac in 2021. Distinctly Cabernet in style, the wine has lovely cassis and blackberry fruit flavours, backed by a touch of graphite minerality. A sweet hint of vanilla from the oak integrates beautifully with the juicy, fruity mid-palate. The wine has good depth while remaining sleek, the tannins supple and clearly carefully extracted. The wine finishes with great balance and a wave of freshness. Yields were 40hl/ha, with 75% new oak for élevage. Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot. 40 hl/ha. Dark crimson hue. Bright and lifted on the nose with blackcurrant and dark-fruit-pastille notes. Medium-bodied, refined and pure. Lacks the density of a top year but smooth-textured with fine, silky tannins. Medium-term ageing potential. (JL)

Tasted blind. Meat and two veg, which developed into sweatiness, on the nose. Then mouth-filling fruit on the palate but no X factor. Glossy texture but very dry on the end. Not much length. (JR)

The 2021 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a super-expressive wine. Cabernet Sauvignon drives the blend, and that translates in the wine's flavor profile. Plum, dried herbs, menthol and spice gradually emerge. Although the 2021 is a bit tight today, it comes across as more of a medium-term proposition.
