The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a total head-turner, vividly fruit-forward yet refined. It's a model of purity. Ripe black cherry, exotic spice, licorice, rose petals, cedar and sage are all delineated in the glass. This is one of the most harmonious wines of the vintage, texturally deep and silky-smooth with masses of red fruits complicated by hints of clove, crunchy minerals and a core of vibrant acidity. Dramatically long and potent yet still fresh, the 2015 echoes with a cascade of spice and inner florals over a complex web of graphite-tinged tannins. Frankly, it's hard not to call this a perfect wine, which it may be one day down the road.

The Le Potazzine 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is released a year after most other Riservas hit the market (most of this winery's peers are now selling the 2016 vintage). This pretty wine is open-knit and rich, showing nice textural support. It is redolent of dried cherry, blackberry, light spice, tar and smoke. This special selection of fruit shows elegant results in this hot and sunny vintage. Production is 3,200 bottles and some larger formats.

Lustrous ruby. Lifted balsamic cherry nose with a peppery tingle and a hint of black tea. Deep ripe and concentrated cherry fruit with fully integrated acidity. Multi-layered finish with quite a bit of stubborn tannins that need more age. (WS)

Leaf-mould nose and then very round, intense fruit on palate entry. Very long and emphatic. Slightly chunky rather than ethereal but a very decent effort. Still pretty drying on the end, as though the grapes could have done with a little more juice. (JR)
